Your Safety Checklist for operating access equipment

We know that it is easy to get carried away in the rush of starting a new project that you may not always remember to observe all the necessary safety precautions before using your hired machine.

Duralift takes safety seriously and we have ensured strict practices in our daily operations to ensure our machines are fully compliant when they reach a customer on a hire. Duralift is committed to doing our utmost in promoting safety and showcasing our customers in the best light possible. So, we have put together a quick safety checklist below to help your risk assessment and guide anyone who is about to use access equipment on the job.*

Your Safety Checklist for risk assessment prior to operating access equipment

Appropriate clothing

  1. Harness
For all boom lifts and for other access equipment if required by site rules
  2. Hard Hat
When using all boom lifts or if any overhead obstacles are in close proximity such as a roof or ceiling
  3. Safety Boots & Hi-Vis
To ensure you don’t slip, trip or drop anything on your feet & Hi-Vis gear to ensure visibility

At the jobsite / location

  1. Assess your surroundings
Do you need to work near powerlines? Do you need to work over water? Is the weather extremely windy?
  2. Assess the ground condition
Is the terrain rough and sloping? Is it a slab/flat surface? Are there potholes?
  3. Assess potential overhead obstacles or falling hazards.
Is your machine capable of achieving the right height and reach?
  4. Have an emergency rescue plan
Have a second person on the ground and a mobile phone or 2-way radio as a precaution in case of an unexpected breakdown
  5. Observe Industry-specific safety precautions relevant to your surroundings
    Using traffic bollards…etc

Before operating a machine

  1. Ensure you have the relevant licence to operate
Do you have a Yellow Card or Worksafe ‘WP’ Licence?
  2. Familiarise yourself with the controls
Operating controls may vary depending on the brand of machine. Read the operators manual and familiarise yourself with the controls
  3. Check the appropriate recommendations of the machine
Such as weight limits. Read the operators manual or check labels located near the operating controls.
  4. Ensure safety rails and guards are in position (and anchor your harness if using a Boom Lift)
  5. Carry out a daily safety check before each time you operate a machine.

You are now ready to operate your EWP!

*NOTE: These are recommendations only. Some jobsites may require more stringent risk assessment and safety precautions.
