When MECCA unveiled its new flagship store at 299 Bourke Street, it became the largest beauty retail space in the Southern Hemisphere. To achieve this, the transformation of the historic Cole’s Book Arcade into a world-class retail experience required careful planning, heritage preservation, and seamless execution. Project Scale and Design
Delivered by Buildcorp Group, with design expertise from RBA Architects and Studio McQualter, the project reimagined more than 4,000sqm across three floors. Furthermore, it required a careful balance between modern retail needs and heritage preservation.
Heritage Considerations
Because of the building’s heritage significance, contractors needed access equipment that was safe, reliable, and suitable for tight indoor spaces. It also had to protect the original fabric of the site, ensuring that every restoration detail was preserved.
